According to what is said on their webpage, the team leader was a Hexen fan. When he was playing Doom 3 and saw Hell levels, he thought like "woah! this is a nice setting for possible Hexen ressurection project".

I tried it recently... ofcourse it is hard to make conclusions on what seems to be mid-alpha stage, but so far I can't say I liked this. In fact my reaction was like "lol wut?? WTF??" orccrazy2 The game setting does not have ANY similarities to original Hexen atmosphere. In fact, I think it's more similar to Hexen 2, plus something very Doom3-ish. It's hard to describe right now, just a feelings.

Authors added new monster: a jumpy imp with burning back, or something like that. Ettins look formidable and move much faster, - good thing IMHO. Also, the new addition is a possibility to block attacks by a shield, which, when successful, reflects all damage.

Anyway, problem is that the game is barely playable at the moment because of very stupid attack logic. For unknown reasons those good people made a mace work like a gun - it hits enemy only when the crosshair is EXACTLY at creature's model. I could kill all Ettins very easily, because they have large bodies and move straight, but the little demons I mentioned above did not leave me any chance (I was loosing about 15-25% health for each killed bastard, and health potions were very few).

Real surprise is AI though, because monsters are dumber than in original Hexen: they only start an attack when you come close and have zero navigation. A very strange thing, assuming mod authors work few years on this already.

EDIT: I found the mod features original hexen cheat codes (like quicken, rambo, indiana etc). So I toggled godmode and ventured futher... I better not, at least I could save a hope :( . For now I find this mod simply disgusting. It does not look like Hexen at all, not even like Hexen2. It is Doom 3, with alternate weapons, enemies and level setting, no more.

Don't forget that

- the developers label you as a troll if you try to argue with them, they can't handle logic. If they feel like replying. For example I wanted to know how will they improve upon Hexen, things like Mace being useless or very boring (if you just increase damage).
- they only make levels specifically designed for each class. This essentially means each class is a part of a level (like in Shadowcaster). The game won't really play different with each class because you won't be visiting the same areas. For all intents and purposes it will be 3 separate games that share monsters.

In my opinion they're just creating a sort-of expansion pack with new graphics and elaborate story (Hexen was never about story any more than Conan). What particularly annoyed me was making Wraithverge central to Cleric's story. That's a weapon which is a no-brainer and you can usually stop to use other weapons.

B0rsuk, I don't intend to insult you in any way, but I think it was your ... style of speech that make people think you are troll :)
I wrote a long post, practically telling them I was very disappointed by what I saw:
http://www.hexenmod.com/forum/viewtopic ... 3056#p3056
yet they did not call me troll.
(I don't think they agreed either though :))

Regarding what I wrote... I think I could get used to their mod over time if they enhance it, but still... it's not what I wanted.

Perhaps apologizing for your impressions is the way to go. That's how your post reads to me. As if you felt bad about your opinions, no wonder they don't treat them seriously either.

I think you're wrong about Hexen not offending your aesthetics much because it sets your expectations lower. While true its engine is not technically advanced, it's great when it comes to concept art, (visual) architecture, sounds. Great artists worked on it. You don't beat that just by throwing technology at it. Engines age, gameplay and style don't. They obviously failed on the latter two.

Well, I never said mine way to express impressions is the best. I know I may sound too polite sometimes. It's just I know how this may feel when someone sais what you do is shit, so I am trying to, umm, smooth it.
(I always have a phobia about my capriciousness makes me overreact to something)

I am of an opinion it's better to have all friends and all enemies. I won't be able to please everyone, trying to do so is a short path to insanity. You will offend some people just by hanging around with people they don't like.

I would prefer to work with a more visually pleasing engine and art assets. But modding Hexen or DooM is enough. I get to learn about what makes a fun game. I'm never afraid to throw an idea away. It's very pleasing to see that my ideas work well (I playtest my mod a lot, perhaps too much). Games, game programming is my hobby and I gain experience which can be transferred to a more modern engine. Graphics isn't needed for that.

They haven't shown anything that could intrigue me. I've seen new levels, fights with small numbers of enemies, lots of empty spaces (like Hexen2). No new gameplay. No old but improved gameplay.

Lol, okay, you seem to be right.

Well, I wasn't going to please them. I felt I won't resist the urge to say what I did not like in their mod, but on the other side I did not like to make a scandal there, since, after all, they were only making their fan mod for fun.

Anyway, I should admit I was surprised when that guy (or girl? no idea) under BloodRayne nickname called you a troll. I guess people have trollo-paranoia nowadays. Annoys me more than trolls themselves.

It's a fashion now, with memes like "haters gonna hate". Criticism, even constructive, is considered a bad thing. Not that it was ever popular.

I contemplated starting Philosophy studies this year, for fun. It's one of few places where critical thinking is valued. Unfortunately philosophy teachers on our university have bad opinion (elitist, intellectual snobs, decadent alcoholics) so I gave up the idea. Maybe somewhere else.

Back to topic, I think I'll post a thread about my mod on their Offtopic forum. Once it's more complete and I'm satisfied with it. But I'm not going to talk about Edge of Chaos with them.
