KORAX MOD

FAQ

General Questions

Q: How do I install and run Korax Mod?

A: Download the Korax Mod files from our SourceForge, unpack the contents of the ZIP file to any directory you like, place your registered Hexen 1.1 WAD file in the same directory you unpacked Korax Mod, then simply run KMD3D or KMOGL to start the game, you can run Korax Mod with the Hexen expansion pack, just place the Deathkings WAD file in the same folder Korax Mod was unpacked and run KMD3D-DK or KMOGL-DK.

NOTE: Korax Mod requires a registered Hexen WAD file, it won't work with Hexen Demo, if you don't have the Hexen 1.1 retail patch, you can locate it here.

Q: The original Hexen cheats aren't working. The console cheats of jHexen don't seem to work, neither. Is there a way to spoil my pleasure with cheats or did you take out all of them?

A: All original cheats from Hexen (and also from jHexen) have been disabled (with the exception of the WARP command from jHexen). There are a couple of cheats in Korax Mod, they just run under new names now. To use them, pull down the console with the ~ key and type them in.

FAG only for fagots - no real man would use this
MAD BUTCHER butchers all monsters in cold blood on the current map
BUNNY turns no clipping on and off
WARP (XY) jump to a certain level (see the Hexen map list here)
ARMLOAD OF WEAPONS* gives you all weapons, max armor and mana
SHOPPING CENTER* gives you 25 of all artifacts

* works only in Korax Mod 2.0 or higher

Q: Is there a walkthrough for Korax Mod?

A: The original Hexen walkthrough applies. See it here.

Q: Can I play Korax Mod with the latest jHexen version?

A: No. Korax Mod is based upon the public 0.99.6 release from July 2000, merged with a pre-release 1.0 Doomsday/jHeretic codebase from the 2nd half of 2000 (mainly the MD2 support). Not only is 1.x jHexen (released 2001 and later) completely incompatible with 0.9x jHexen, but even the whole mod "support" has been drastically changed between these versions, making all and any jHexen 0.9x mods incompatible with jHexen 1.x (we're not the only one suffering from this). So there is no way to make our mod work with any current jHexen version, short of re-writing it from scratch. With about the same amount of work we could port the mod to Vavoom, which would offer real additional benefits, not just a couple more fancy visual effects like latest jHexen versions.

In case for someone it's still not entirely clear, there will never be a Korax Mod for jHexen 1.x. If you really find it that important, you're welcome to try your hands on the Korax Mod source code, which is open source and available on SourceForge.

Q: Are there any plans for further development of Korax Mod?

A: Because of the delayed release of Scattered Evil, KMOD development is still going on to bring you some of the new features of Scattered Evil before that TC comes out.

Q: I still encountered a couple of bugs in the game. Why don't you fix it?

A: The bugs not yet fixed in 2.8 are mostly basic probs with the jHexen version we used (and thus we didn't have the potential to fix it). On the other hand, Korax Mod is an open source project, located on SourceForge. You're welcome to grab the source code, fix any bugs, then send us the new version. We might even offer it officially for download.

Version Specific Questions

Version 1.x

Q: I just finished the first episode (The Seven Portals) and when I enter the portal, the game crashes with the error message "W_GetNumForName: clus1msg not found!" and the game crashes, I can't get into the 2nd episode. What's amiss?

A: Several people reported this problem and it seems there is no 100% solution. What you could try is to use the warp command: pull down the console with the ~ key and type in " WARP 07" (without the quotes).

Also, in some cases it seems the problem is caused by a corrupted savegame. Using different save game slots and saving alternately helps you at least as far that in such a case you won't have to start from the very beginning.

One word in our defense, this bug isn't limited to Korax Mod, it plagues the jHexen version Korax Mod is based upon, too.

Version 1.1

Q: I am not sure about installing the 1.1 patch... I've played the game halfway through and I don't want to restart in case the patch breaks my savegame.

A: Go ahead and install it, savegames of Korax Mod 1.0 and 1.1 are 100% compatible in both directions, so not only above example is OK but also if you have a 1.1 savegame, you can play it w/o probs on a machine that runs 1.0. This applies only to single player savegames, but as multiplayer isn't working at all in 1.0, it shouldn't be a real prob. :)

Version 2.x

Q: What's the difference between Korax Mod II and Korax Mod 2.0?

A: The way you look upon Life, the Universe and Everything... Korax Mod 1.0 is the original release of Korax Mod, and along with the patched up 1.1 version, it's called Korax Mod. Korax Mod 2.0 is using the same code base as Korax Mod did and is a seamless extension of it, but as gameplay changes are rather radical, we decided to give this 2.0 release a kind of new name. That's why Korax Mod 2.0 was called Korax Mod II ifrom Fall 2001 to May 2002 (the 2 being exactly the same). Another reason for the different name was to pay hommage to the god "Marketing". But in the end, while 2.x greatly differs from 1.x, it's still the same RPG mod for Hexen. The 1.0, 1.1 and 2.2 releases have a title screen calling it "Korax Mod", the 2.0 and 2.1 releases display "Korax Mod II" at startup.

Q: Do I get to conjure white bunnies with the Fighter as well now?

A: Uh... that's what the Mage character is intended for... though the Fighter still doesn't have any magical spells in Korax Mod II, it now has Battle Rage which is similar to the Mage's Magic and the Cleric's Faith. He also has a spell-like thingie, it's called Berserker... that should tell everything, I guess.

Version 3.x

Q: When will 3.x be out?

A: We have decided to stop developing Korax Mod based on jHexen, since the version we are using is from ages ago, we have begun porting it to the Vavoom engine instead. It'll take time to make a good port of the features Korax Mod has, so there's no aproximate release date for now, once we have something we'll update this documentation. Korax Mod 3.x beta won't be supported by Korax' Heritage anymore.
